BROOKLYN, NY — Bedazzled and finned New Yorkers will take to the streets of Coney Island this weekend for the first Mermaid Parade in three years.
The event, which is organized by arts non-profit Coney Island USA and self-described as the nation’s “largest art parade,” will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 18.
This weekend marks the first Mermaid Parade since 2019, following two years of cancellations amid the pandemic. It also marks the parade’s 40th anniversary.
The parade will chart a course down Surf Avenue and onto the boardwalk, culminating near Maimonides Park, where Artistic Director Adam Rinn will lead the procession’s Queen Mermaid and King Neptune — singer-slash-activist Mx Justin Vivian Bond and former pandemic health commissioner Dr. Dave Chokshi, respectively — to the beach for a final ceremony.
Whether you want to cheer on a glittery float or jump in the ocean, here’s everything you need to know about Coney Island’s 2022 Mermaid Parade.
What is the parade course?
The parade begins on Surf Ave and West 21st Street in Coney Island. It will head east on Surf Avenue, turn right onto West 10th Street (at which point cars will disperse) and turn right again onto the boardwalk. Human-guided floats and marchers will continue down the boardwalk towards West 17th Street at which point the parade will disband at Steeplechase Park. See the full map here.
What about the Queen Mermaid and King Neptune procession?
After the parade, about 4 p.m., artistic director Adam Rinn will lead Queen Mermaid and King Neptune from the review stand at 19th Street and Surf Avenue, through Maimonides Park Parking lot to the beach. There, the official beach ceremony will take place, and the ocean will be opened for the summer swimming season.
Can I register to be in the parade?
Yes! You can register to participate in the parade online until Wednesday, June 15th at 11:59 p.m. Day-of registration is also available (cash only) for slightly more money at 10 a.m. at the parade start line.
Is there an after party?
The official after party organized by Coney Island USA and Coney Island Brewery is aptly dubbed “The Mermaid Parade Ball The Official After Party of the Mermaid Parade.” The event is at Coney Island Brewery, located at 1904 Surf Avenue, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. for people 21+. Tickets (which are all will call only) start at $25 per-person. More details here.
